Hennepin County Library – Northeast, 2200 Central Ave., N.E., Minneapolis, has been recognized by American Libraries, the magazine of the American Library Association, for its recent renovation and expansion. The library is cited in the March/April 2012 issue, “Library Design Showcase,” in the Youth Spaces section.
American Libraries’ annual “Library Design Showcase” spotlights “some of the best in new library design…[and] renovations.” Libraries selected this year are located across the U.S. and Canada, and are outstanding examples of libraries that are changing to meet the varied and changing needs of library patrons. “As the transformation of libraries continues, it follows that the physical structure would have to transform as well to support changes in services, missions, and audience,” associate editor Greg Landgraf reported.
American Libraries commended Northeast Library for its outstanding youth areas and natural lighting: “The expansion of the Northeast Library created spaces for bigger children’s and teen areas. The children’s space boasts a reading nook, interactive early-literacy panels, and bins for displaying easy fiction and nonfiction collections. The project introduced tall windows and clerestories throughout the building to increase natural light levels within the space.”
Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Stenglein, who has called Northeast Library “a community and cultural center…a mainstay of the community,” said, "Throughout the renovation of Northeast Library, we put a major emphasis on fostering a comfortable space to facilitate learning and growth — from early childhood well into late adulthood. This recognition from American Libraries is an honor and shows we were able to do just that. Many thanks to the stellar staff and volunteers who use the improved space to provide great library service and keep kids coming back."
Built in 1973, the Northeast Library closed in October 2009 for the expansion/renovation project and reopened on April 2, 2011.  The library was expanded by 2,400 square feet to a total of 16,900 square feet.
Architect for the project was the Cuningham Group. General contractor was Gen-Con Construction. City of Minneapolis bonds provided $3.785 million for the renovation, to which the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners added $1.45 million to provide a more complete project for the community.
