Bike Maintenance, Spice Blends Workshops Begin in March at Hennepin County Libraries
Gear up for spring with “Bike Maintenance” workshops led by a mechanic from Freewheel Bike or learn how to create spice blends for the grill and beyond at “Sugar & Spice” workshops with instructors from Urban Relish.
The free workshops begin in March and are part of Hennepin County Library’s “Library Laboratory” series offering adults hands-on learning opportunities with local experts on a wide variety of subjects.
Library Laboratory: Bike Maintenance
Thad Cialek of Freewheel Bike will demonstrate basic bike maintenance and answer your questions at bike labs March 4-May 6. He’ll cover changing a flat tire, patching a tube, reinstalling a wheel and lubricating the chain, derailleurs and brake pivots.
Things that can go wrong if you don’t properly maintain your bike include “squeaky or rusted chains caused by lack of lubrication, leading to premature chain wear; pinch-flatted tires caused by under-inflated tires; rusted cables, causing inaccurate shifting; and improperly installed wheel quick releases, which can cause wheels to fall out or shift while riding,” Cialek said.
He added, “The most common repair a cyclist will encounter is a flat tire. The possibility of getting a flat tire may deter some riders from adventuring far from home. Being confident in fixing a flat can make your riding experience better.”
A cycle mechanic for 10 years, Cialek has been Golden Wrench Certified with Freewheel Bike since 2010. He was certified as an Elite Mechanic by Barnett’s Bicycle Institute in Colorado and received training at the Park Tool Technical Summit, a professional training program in which the biggest cycling component companies provide hands-on training for shop mechanics.
Handouts will include a recommended service schedule. The workshops are presented in collaboration with Freewheel Bike.

Library Laboratory: Sugar & Spice

Mary Jo Rasmussen and other instructors from Urban Relish will demonstrate how to make spice blends and grilling rubs at “Sugar & Spice” labs March 12-May 18. Participants will make a spice blend to take home.
“These classes will focus on using spices and spice blends to add flavor to your food, from chili to soups and even hot chocolate and popcorn,” Rasmussen said. “We will cover buying, storing and using spices, including how to coax difference flavor nuances from the same spice, depending on whether you use it whole, toast it and grind it or combine it with other spices.”
“We’ll talk about spices that are commonly used in cooking, such as oregano, basil, rosemary and more, but we’ll also taste less common spices like smoked paprika, ras al hanout and turmeric,” she said.
Handouts will include recipes and suggestions for making spice blends such as taco seasoning and a barbecue rub. Participants can follow a recipe or create their own custom spice blend to take home.
"Spice blends are easy to make, and when you make your own, you ensure that the ingredients are fresh, you know there are no additives, and you can save money by combining spices you already have in new and interesting ways,” Rasmussen said.
Urban Relish instructors are professional caterers and kitchen organization consultants who have managed a cooking school, teach cooking classes and host private events. The workshops are presented in collaboration with Urban Relish.
