MINUTES OF
HENNEPIN COUNTY LIBRARY BOARD MEETING
OF February 28, 2001

The Hennepin County Library Board met on Wednesday, January 24, 2001, at the Ridgedale Area Library.

Present: President Carol Walsh, John Gibbs, Dawn Harris, Patricia Izek, David Pratt, Cynthia Steinke.

Welcome & Public Comment
President Walsh called the meeting to order and welcomed all guests, thanked everyone for attending the Hennen Reception which preceeded the meeting, and introduced the two new Library Board members Dawn Harris and Cynthia Steinke. There was no public comment.

APPROVAL
A motion to approve the minutes of the January 24, 2001, meeting was made by J. Gibbs, seconded, and motion passed.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
There were no Committee Reports, however, President Walsh announced that David Pratt has agreed to chair the Ways & Means Committee, and Cynthia Steinke will serve on the Policy Committee with Patricia Izek and Julia Morgan.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Foundation Update - C. DeGraff

The Library Foundation would like to schedule a more detailed update at a future Library Board meeting. There are 9 new Foundation Board members; new officers are Jeff Scherer, President, Gail See, Vice President, Deb Sit, Treasurer, and David Gradick, Secretary. The new Foundation budget is a little over $600,000, including funding 7 new library programs--DVD collection, One World Series, Emerging Authors Lecture Series, Children's Readmobile 5th day of operation, diversity recruitment posters for libraries, 4-H club start-up costs in one of the south area libraries, Spectrum Initiative Scholarship Program, and continued funding of other programs. The Grant Writer & Development Associate Gay Gonnerman has started work as the first Foundation-funded position, and Chris hopes to introduce her at a future meeting. Construction Projects Update - C. Brown
EP - County Board has approved the design work.
SA - working on obtaining art for the project.
Wa - Update on the TIF situation.
Os - City Hall renovation compromise that includes the library space.
Ex - Fire Department may re-locate, opening up possible library expansion options.

NEW BUSINESS
Nothing.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT
C. Brown called attention to the January Statistical Summary with significant increases in all activities.

MEMBER REPORTS
Carol Walsh:
mentioned MN Library Legislative Day, National Library Legislative Day, ALA Annual Conference, and the list of Library Board Events that is mailed every month (starred items request Lib Bd attendance).
David Pratt: reported on the applicants for Library Board positions and that he was quite impressed with the quality of the applicants, and hopes that the library can tap into them as a resource. [Community Relations will send a letter to unsuccessful applicants with volunteer and Friends information.]
Patricia Izek: Will plan to attend the summer Foundation Board meetings in June, July & August. [Update: David Pratt will be the official Library Board representative to the Library Foundation Board.]

Motion to accept the gifts made by P. Izek; seconded by J. Gibbs; motion passed.
$50.00 Helen Malby to the Excelsior Library for annual flowers for the front garden.
491.52 Friends of the Excelsior Library to the Excelsior Library for two performances by Bill the Juggler, bookbags, bookmarks, and lollipop treats.
25.00 Friends of the Excelsior Library to the Excelsior Library for two children's books in memory of Parker Fettig.
446.35 Friends of the Excelsior Library to the Excelsior Library for circulating and reference copies of local Excelsior/Lake Minnetonka history books.
10.00 Friends of the Excelsior Library to the Excelsior Library for one-year subscription to Lakestyle Magazine.
200.00 Friends of the Excelsior Library to the Excelsior Library for birdseed to be put in the front garden feeders.
26.00 Friends of the Excelsior Library to the Excelsior Library for a one-year subscription to Chanhassen Villager.
249.85 Friends of the Excelsior Library to the Excelsior Library for 52 circulating adult browsing periodicals.
