Funding Spotlights

CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES
Baby Storytime.....Reading, singing, and socializing together encourages language development in infants. Parents discover activities that build the foundation for literacy. Baby Storytimes are targeted to babies from birth to 24 months. The program fits into the strategic direction for lifelong learning, customer driven service, and the library's commitment to early literacy.

Family Read to Me.....The award-winning Family Read to Me program has served hundreds of new Americans and other residents of Bloomington and Richfield since 1993 through creative community connections. Those connections include the partnership of Hennepin County Library with SHAPE/Volunteer Connection (an adult education program), Cargill, and the Library Foundation of Hennepin County. The connections run like strands of a three-dimensional web between Cargill employee volunteers, librarians, Volunteer Connection staff, new program participants, and past participants who return year after year for semi-annual reunions.

Guys Read Book Clubs.....Support for boys' book discussion groups at Minnetonka, Eden Prairie, and Ridgedale Libraries. Boys, ages 10-12, read and discuss books on a range of topics. Participation in an all-boys book group for this age group has proven to increase interest and success in reading. Pre-teen boys are at risk of losing their interest in reading without targeted opportunities like the Guys Read Book Clubs. New funding will provide boys' book clubs system-wide.

Hot Reads for Cold Nights.....An opportunity for teens and adults to power-up their reading habits during Minnesota's coldest months. Participants enter a prize drawing at their local Hennepin County Library each time they finish a book in January and February. This low-stress, high-incentive program will keep readers' hearts and minds warm on cold winter nights.

Readmobile.....The mission of the Children's Readmobile is to bring the library to the early childhood community-especially to the children who are hardest to reach. Readmobile's primary purpose is to provide early learning and literacy experiences through programming and materials for children in childcare and other early childhood development programs. The Children's Readmobile program seeks to improve the school readiness level of suburban Hennepin County children, age 0-6, as they prepare to enter kindergarten. The Readmobile visits 70 Hennepin County childcare homes and family literacy sites Monday through Friday, year-round in Hennepin County.
