Black Americans in Congress 1870-2007 chronicles the lives and accomplishments of the 121 African Americans who have been elected to the United States Congress. Major Robert Odell Owens was elected in 1983 to fill the seat of the legendary Brooklyn (N.Y.) Representative Shirley Chisholm. Before being elected to Congress, Major Owens worked as a librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library. Barack Obama's career as the fifth African American to be elected to the United States Senate is also included.
