Senator Al Franken is conducting a series of open houses around the state until he is able to set up permanent offices.  The Star Tribune has listed a schedule.  You can also find contact  information for Senator Amy Klobuchar and any of Minnesota's eight Representatives through their websites at Senate.gov and House.gov.

Instant-Runoff Voting
Read a thorough explanation of this system from the MN House of Representatives Research Department  The city of Minneapolis calls it Ranked Choice Voting and wants to use this method in the November 2009 election.  The Minnesota Supreme Court will rule on the issue soon.

Black Americans in Congress
Black Americans in Congress 1870-2007 chronicles the lives and accomplishments of the 121 African Americans who have been elected to the United States Congress.  Major Robert Odell Owens was elected in 1983 to fill the seat of the legendary Brooklyn (N.Y.) Representative Shirley Chisholm. Before being elected to Congress, Major Owens worked as a librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library.  Barack Obama's career as the fifth African American to be elected to the United States Senate is also included.

The Vice President ial Debate will be Thursday, Oct. 2 at Washington University in St. Louis. The next Presidential Debate will be Tuesday, October 7 at Belmont University in Nashville and the third and last debate will be at Hofstra University, Hempstead, N.Y on Wednesday, October 15.

Presidential Debates
The first Presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain is Friday September 26 at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, with Jim Lehrer as moderator. Foreign policy and national security will be the focus. Dates and moderators for the two remaining presidential debates and one vice presidential debate have been announced by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

On Tuesday , February 5, 2008, 7pm Minnesota will hold political party caucuses. For more information contact your political party. Democratic Party, Republican Party, or Independence Party.  The Secretary of State also has general information about the caucuses.

On to New Hampshire
Did you know that New Hampshire held its first primary on the second Tuesday of March in 1916, along with Minnesota. Indiana held its primary a week earlier. New Hampshire became first-in-the-nation in 1920 when Indiana moved its date to May and Minnesota returned to a caucus.  Learn more at the New Hampshire Political Library site. The primary is January 8.
