Brooklyn Daily Eagle
The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, which once included Walt Whitman as editor, has been digitized by the Brooklyn Public Library. So far, the run of the paper from 1841 to 1902 is available online, and is keyword searchable.  Try the keyword "sewing-women" to find Whitman's 1846 editorial on women's wages, or the keyword "Superbas" to read about the baseball team later known as the Dodgers.

Just in time for Halloween--news to make your blood run cold.
The Wall Street Journal of October 15 reported on "alleged conflicts of interest" that had surfaced in Calpers, America's largest public pension fund.   As a follow-up, I checked to see if the WSJ had recently published any other articles on the perils that pension funds face and--sure enough--the following article, dated August 8, 2008, came to light:  "Companies Tap Pension Funds to Fund Executive Benefits; Little-Known Move Uses Tax Break Meant for Rank and File."   Spine chilling, isn't it?
