|Creator||Polanie Club. (Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minn.)|
|Title:||Polanie Club Collection|
|Repository:||James K. Hosmer Special Collections Library|
In October of 1927, twelve young women living in the Twin Cities founded a social club to share their Polish background with each other. They called themselves the Polanie Club, Polanie means "people of the plains". The purpose of the club was to enrich their knowledge of Polish language, music, literature, food, history, art and folklore. The Club became a resource on Polish subjects, furnishing costumes, exhibits, recipes and a library on Polish subjects for the community. Membership was limited to about 30 people. To join, a prospective member must be invited, be of Polish ancestry, show an interest in the study and promotion of Polish culture and have talents to contribute to the club's projects.
Members took turns hosting meetings at their homes, until the 1980s, when meetings were moved to the Polanie Center at 643 Madison Street NE. In the 1930s the Club established classes in the Polish language at the University of Minnesota and in two public high schools. In 1942 the club formed its own publishing company. Over time several books were published, including a book of poetry, cookbooks and sheet music, and short stories. In 1966 the Polanie Club sponsored the Annual Convention of the American Council of Polish Cultural Clubs (now known as the American Council for Polish Culture) at the University of Minnesota in honor of the Polish Millennium with a program of distinguished lecturers on the theme, "Poland through a Thousand Years". The Polanie Club also supported the Polish American Cultural Institute of Minnesota in hosting the 1996 ACPC convention, held in Minneapolis. In 2000 the Polanie Club created a post-secondary scholarship program.
