History
Stanley Hall was an English and classical school for girls. It opened in 1890 and was located at 10 East 17th Street in Minneapolis until it moved into its new facilities at 2118 Pleasant Avenue South in 1896 where it remained until 1921. It was also referred to as Stanley College.
Ruth Ritteman and her sister Irene attended Stanley Hall from 1920 to 1921. Ruth compiled a scrapbook that included a roll call of students, programs, mementos, newspaper clippings from theater, lectures, musical events, dances. Also included in the scrapbook are professional photographs of the interior and exterior of Stanley Hall, snapshots of classmates and friends, and an oversized photograph of students in front of a building. Other material include invitations, cards, broadsides, and a booklet on student life at Stanley Hall written by Principal Olive A. Evers and a directory of the departments, instruction, clubs and organizations, and classes offered. The scrapbook and accompanying material loose in the scrapbook documents activities and events of Minneapolis in the early 1920s and provide valuable material on a young woman's academy in Minneapolis.
