Biography
Minneapolis poet Lucille Barrett was born in 1903, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Barrett. She died at the age of 18 on January 28, 1921 of tuberculosis before seeing her poetry in print in Harper's Monthly Magazine. Barrett lived on York Avenue in Minneapolis and attended West Side High School before her illness and death at Glen Lake Sanatorium in Hopkins, MN.
Collection Description
One box. It contains 2 issues of Harper's Monthly Magazine. Issue number 857 (October 1921) contains Barrett's poem "Autumn Trail," and issue 859 (December 1921) contains an excerpt from correspondence between the magazine and the Lucille Barrett's parents, noting the author's early death. The April and December 1915 editions of Douglas School-Life Magazine, published by the seventh and eighth grade students of Douglas School in Minneapolis, both contain poems by Lucille Barrett as an eighth grader.
A folder contains newspaper clippings about Lucille Barrett, typed versions of her poems with praise and criticism, a letter to of condolence from the President of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor to Lucille Barrett's father, and the letters from Harper's Magazine accepting Lucille Barrett's poem for publication.
