Lawrence James Hill is originally from Grand Forks, North Dakota. He earned a B.A. and M.A from Eastern Michigan University before pursuing a doctorate in Theater Arts from the University of Minnesota. His 1979 thesis --
A History of Variety-Vaudeville in Minneapolis, Minnesota, From Its Beginning to 1900 -- is still regarded as an authoritative source on the topic.
Hill has gone on to teach at the University of North Dakota, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and at Western Carolina University.
Collection Description
The collection consists of four boxes of notes assembled for Hill's University of Minnesota doctoral thesis
A History of Variety-Vaudeville in Minneapolis, Minnesota, From Its Beginning to 1900.
Boxes one and two are a card index of relevant articles arranged chronologically boxes three and four contain photocopies of articles of variety and vaudeville performances taken from local newspapers from the 1850s through 1889.
