Cosmic Trip: Psychedelic Posters by Juryj Ostroushko

In 1969 and 1970, an unprecedented series of music shows took place at the Labor Temple in Southeast Minneapolis. The Temple’s ballroom held nearly 50 weekly dance concerts, featuring leading international acts such as the Grateful Dead and Jeff Beck Group, and local opening bands including Jokers Wild.

To accompany the series, colorful posters designed by Juryj Ostroushko featured appropriated images from published sources, the artist’s own fluid illustrations, and hand-lettered typography. The artist used colored paper stock, multiple inks on press, and posterization, which rendered the images in high contrast. Posters were printed in small quantities and placed in shop windows and on telephone poles but rarely kept, making them scarce today.

A chapter in the long and rich history of Minnesota music, see a collection of these original posters on display May 4-June 28 in Cargill Hall at Minneapolis Central Library.

Join us for an opening reception Saturday, May 4, 1-4 p.m., including a panel discussion with Juryj Ostroushko, and a Vinyl Revival pop-up listening session.
