Engaging new audiences and building community
Carolyne Naomi began performing locally in 2018. Her style of music is a blend of West African Afrobeats and R&B. “…MNspin is a great way to connect more with potential new fans and followers in Minnesota…,” said Naomi. “There’s always a ripple effect with great opportunities like this. You just never know who’s watching or listening to your music…”
Molly Maher has been involved with the Minnesota music scene for 20 years as a performer, curator and mentor. “...MNspin presents an opportunity for my music to be heard alongside many other artists I might not be normally ‘paired up’ with,” she said. “As a resource for the community, these curated playlists are a great addition to the library system, allowing an all-access pass to local music, creating a sustainable musical ecosystem.”
“Our EP ‘Deathfolk Magic’ was selected to become part of the beautifully curated collection that is MNspin,” said singer-songwriter Jezebel Jones of Bye Bye Banshee. “This avant-garde folk music – which deals with the topics of death, grief and the afterlife – was meant for philosophers, spirit seekers, poetry lovers, readers. After all, I fell madly in love with books before I ever wrote a lick of music."
A playlist chosen for you
Library staff worked with six community curators to select the new additions to the collection. The curators included local music leaders and library staff members who have deep roots in Minnesota music.
