Southdale Library open houses May 30, June 8

Southdale Library

Join us at two community open houses for the new Southdale Library this spring.

Thursday, May 30, 6-8 p.m.
15-minute program at 6:45 p.m.

Saturday, June 8, 10 a.m.-noon
15-minute program at 10:45 a.m.

Meeting location:
Former Hennepin County Service Center (adjacent to current Southdale Library)
7009 York Ave. S., Edina

At the meetings you will:

  • Learn about the new site location at Southdale Center and adjacent amenities
  • Review a summary of library programming insights and ideas previously supplied by community members
  • Add any library programming ideas not already documented
  • View preliminary bicycle and pedestrian connections for the recommended library site
  • Understand next steps and future opportunities to be part of creating a new regional library.

Southdale Center site recommendation

Other recent investments in the mall will bring live/work space, a state-of-the-art fitness center, and soccer fields to the property. Co-locating with other amenities at Southdale Center will create a more dynamic and convenient experience for patrons, and may attract people who do not currently use the library. Southdale Center also is accessible by public transit and is a bus route connector in the area.

Building the library at the Southdale Center location allows for almost seamless library services. In contrast, re-building on the existing site would result in the closure of the library for at least 12-18 months.

These open houses will provide a comprehensive summary of the project status—helpful for both those who are new to this project and those who have been following.

If you cannot attend an open house, you may review the status of the project on the building project webpage. All meeting materials will be on the website by Thursday, May 30. Submit any questions or comments by Saturday, June 8, at noon.

Hennepin County staff will share a summary of community feedback with the Hennepin County Board on June 11.

Construction will start in the new building at the Southdale Center in 2020 with potential completion in early 2022.
