The general contractor for the Southeast Library renovation project, Shaw-Lundquist Associates Inc., has taken possession of the building and the demolition work is well underway.
Interior walls are being removed on the main level, including the old bank vault walls from the building’s original function as a Ralph Rapson-designed credit union.
On the lower level, closed to the public in recent years, all interior walls have been removed, along with the original 1964 HVAC system. Cutting has begun for a new, enlarged floor opening that will enhance the connection between the upper and lower levels.
The library is currently scheduled to reopen in late 2019.
