Current service information

Hennepin County Library continues to reintroduce services throughout summer 2020, with an emphasis on the safety of our staff and patrons.

You can access library services in three ways: in-person, curbside, and online.

In-person services

  • Grab and Go
Are you hoping to make a quick visit to the library? Select libraries are welcoming patrons into the building for short visits through our new Grab and Go service. Keep in mind, a visit to the library will look and feel different while the need for physical distancing continues.
  • Computer use by appointment
Select libraries can accommodate computer use by appointment.

Curbside service

Many library locations continue to provide contactless curbside pickup of physical materials.

Online services

Now is a great time to connect to library resources from home, with many resources offering new or expanded remote access.

Returning materials

  • Returns are accepted at all curbside, grab and go and computer use by appointment locations during regularly scheduled operating hours.
  • Southdale Library is also currently accepting returns while they prepare for limited in-person service (launching July 27). Please use the special book return bins near the entrance, as the drive-up lane is not currently in service.
  • Closed libraries are unable to accept returns. Visit our locations page for a list of current service locations.
  • Items will be removed from your account after they have been quarantined.
  • You are not required to return materials at this time. Due dates for physical materials continue to be automatically extended.

Not reopening in 2020

As  directed by the county board, nine libraries will not reopen in 2020: East Lake, Golden Valley, Linden Hills, Long Lake, Minnetonka, Osseo, Pierre Bottineau, Roosevelt, and St. Bonifacius. No permanent closures have been directed, and the county’s COVID-19 response continues to evolve.
