About the art

This may look like an old beaten-up book, but looks can be deceiving. It’s actually part of the “Decayed Volume Series,” a project by local book artist W.H. Schilling that mimics the effects of time and age on well-loved tomes. Schilling usually uses a hand-fed Vandercook SP20 cylinder letterpress for his printing at Indulgence Press, but for this series he switched to gum-bichromate, a photographic printing process from the 19th century. The resulting look honors the history, value and legacy of books over time.
