Hennepin County has named Scott Duimstra as the next director for Hennepin County Library (HCL). Mr. Duimstra’s appointment was unanimously confirmed by the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners on August 22 and is the result of a nationwide search that began in June 2023.

“Hennepin County has a strong reputation for providing excellent library service,” said Mr. Duimstra. “I’m honored to contribute to that tradition and further the library’s mission to inspire, facilitate, and celebrate lifelong learning. I’m eager to begin making new connections with staff and residents."

Mr. Duimstra has worked as a professional librarian for 20 years, earning his Master of Science in Information (MSI) from the University of Michigan School of Information. In 2019, Mr. Duimstra was elected by his peers to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Michigan Library Association (MLA) and in 2022 as President of MLA. He has served as executive director for the Capital Area District Library system in Lansing, MI since 2017.

Mr. Duimstra will be responsible for executive leadership for more than 600 staff at 41 library locations. The library director is a Twin Cities-based position that works closely with county administration, community partners, and other county departments to leverage library programs and services to improve life outcomes for all residents.

"Our libraries are an essential and beloved public institution," said Hennepin County Board Chair Irene Fernando. "We are excited to welcome Scott and continue building upon HCL’s legacy of service."

Mr. Duimstra’s appointment was recommended by the Hennepin County Library Board, an advisory group comprised of commissioner-appointed residents and library supporters. "We had an outstanding pool of 45 candidates," said Library Board President Jane Brissett. "The Library Board, which represents the community, is thrilled to have Scott relocate to Minnesota to elevate and celebrate our fantastic Hennepin County libraries."

Mr. Duimstra will begin his new role in October.
